Lets set the record STRAIGHT.

"You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise."-Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is such a beautiful soul.

This quote has shown to be my motto for today. I try very hard not to let other people (even when it is so called “family”) bring me down, but sometimes it hits you with the force of a Mack truck. I have to write b/c that is the only way to get these emotions out. I don’t bury anymore. My writing allows me to express emotions without blowing a gasket. I know my weaknesses well!

I felt it necessary to compose this particular blog post towards the persons or people who want to question the “validity” of certain components to my book. I will GLADLY mail you (even pay the postage!) the police reports & interviews. I feel literally punched in the gut when I hear this! You missed the entire point of my book! You have NO idea what your talking about, and when I have had no communication with you for almost 12 years…put your energy towards a worthy cause. Oh say, domestic violence awareness….you know that thing that took my mothers life? Funny, that and child abuse were my reasons behind the book. Go figure.

You did nothing when they were alive. You did nothing in the years since. These records are PUBLIC knowledge. Anyone off the street can get them. This is why I printed the interviews in the book verbatim. You concern yourself with ONE measly piece of trivial information, and why? When my mother & I were getting beat years ago that wasn't enough to move you into action? NOW you have something to say?

You have NO right to judge me. You have NO say in my life anymore. I don’t care if it is blood we share b/c that is ALL we share. I will NOT let your words & malicious actions hurt me anymore. You may try to kill me with your hatefulness, but guess what? I WILL RISE. And you know what else? I WILL NOT BE SILENT!

I will also pray for forgiveness, b/c no matter how much I want to hang on to the bitterness this invokes in me…I can’t. I pray you will someday understand, and if not, that is your lot in life not mine.

  1. awesome...I hope you sent those words directly to the people to whom you are referring! It is "funny" how they have nothing to say when the act is being committed but become full of opinions later...they are just jealous and bitter themselves.
Arise sweet April, now is your time, you are a child of the one true living God!
That happens to make you a Princess...Princess April! Love, dawni

  2. April, continue to remain strong. You are the one who was there and you are the one who knows. Don't allow anyone, no matter who it is, to take away from you the progress you have made. The ones who remain silent are the week ones (I know because I did for way too long). You are a voice of courage and inspiration to many and God knows there are many who need it. When I finish my human service degree I hope to work and advocate for victims of domestic violence. You are a strong woman and it is awesome that you are using your strength to help others. I can't wait to read your book!

Empty

Will I ever feel normal? Will I always be on the outside looking in? I never feel like I belong, and my gut continues to tell me all I say is wrong. Why couldn’t there have been just one? One that truly loved me so… Will this empty pit ever be gone? As I sit here alone, I know that is where I belong. I don’t understand any other way… What am I supposed to say? I feel the pressure sitting on my chest.. Why can’t I fit in like all the rest? I am hiding the tears because I have to be strong… I cannot be weak because than I truly do feel like a freak. I am trying not to feel sad, but it is so hard when all I feel is bad. Life will continue to move on, but I hope that I figure this out before I am long gone.
The pain never really goes away….I know I need to start writing again, but I tend to get caught up in just trying to live. If we can call it that. I buried my mother over 40 years ago…there is a hole inside of me that nothing has been able to fill. I didn’t just bury her, but part of me that day. She was so young. It is so depressing to me how we as a society just live so flippantly like tomorrow is promised. Do I feel cheated? 100%. Have I been the best mother? Probably not, but I can say with everything I still have left in me…I tried.  As a person, life happens. Stuff happens. It shapes us, and we look back years later, and say what the heck was I thinking?? But, at that moment we only see what's in front of our face…not tomorrow. Once they are gone. It is done. There is no do over. What was her favorite food? What made her happy? Those questions will never be answered.  Holding on to stuff that has happened is like a toxic poison. It is not hurting the ones gone or that di...

Never let go

Behind each human face is a hidden world that no one can see.
We cannot continue to seek outside ourselves for the things we need from within. The demons will haunt us if we remain afraid. Silence is one of the great victims of modern culture.
-John O'Donohue This quote hit home this morning when I read it. I spent years looking outside of myself to find something or someone to fill those empty spaces that gnawed at me daily. I made life-changing decisions based on just wanting acceptance and love. I continued to chase after something that I would never find outside of myself. Your parents may be the ones that birthed you, but they do NOT define who you become unless you let them. We remain in our hell of silence more so than not b/c the pain & shame are just too great. No one understands, right? We turn everything inward, and it eats away at any bit of happiness & fulfillment we could possibly get out of life. Why? We are taught that asking for help makes you weak...
